In terms of format, the Ghana Premier League operates as a double round-robin league. Each of the 18 participating teams faces every other team twice during the season—once at their own home ground and once at the opponent's stadium.

At the end of the season, the team that accumulates the highest number of points is crowned the champion. On the other hand, the three teams that finish at the bottom of the league standings are relegated to the Ghanaian Division One League.

Currently, the 2023-24 Ghana Premier League season is underway, which marks the 68th edition. The newly promoted Bofoakwa is leading the league table with 8 points. FYI, the season commenced on September 15, 2023, and is scheduled to conclude in June 2024.

Ghana Premier League Table Overview

ghana premier league

The league table in the Ghana Premier League, like in many soccer leagues around the world, is determined primarily by three factors: points, goal difference, and goals scored.

Although all three are pretty familiar to any football fanatic, we'll still go into detail and explain how these elements work together to rank teams in the league:

Points: Teams earn points based on the results of their matches during the season. When we talk about the Ghana Premier League, in particular, teams earn points according to the following structure:

  • Three points for a win: When a team wins a match, they earn three points in the league standings.
  • One point for a draw: If a match ends in a draw (no winner), both teams receive one point each.
  • 0 points for a loss: A team that loses a match doesn't earn any points.

Goal Difference (GD): Goal difference is the numerical difference between the number of goals a team has scored (GF or Goals For) and the number of goals they have conceded(GA or Goals Against) throughout the season. It's calculated by subtracting the total goals conceded from the total goals scored.

  • For example, Accra Lions have scored 20 goals and conceded 15, their goal difference is +5 (20 - 15). Similarly, the Great Olympics has scored 18 goals but conceded 10, their goal difference is +8 (18 - 10). In this case, the Great Olympics has a better goal difference than the Accra Lions.

Note: Goal difference comes into play when two or more teams have the same number of points. The one with better GD will be ranked above and vice versa.

Goals Scored: It's safe to assume that everyone knows what "Goals Scored" means, but what really matters is grasping how it influences the team rankings in the league table.

If teams have the same number of points and the same goal difference, their ranking can be further determined by the total number of goals they have scored during the season. The team with the most goals scored will be ranked higher.

Say, the Hearts of Oak and Berekum Chelsea have the same GD. However, the former has scored 48 goals all throughout the season, while the latter only managed 31. Hence, the Hearts of Oak will sit higher than Berekum Chelsea.

Ghana Premier League Standings 🏆

Ghana premier league

In the previous season (2022-2023), Medeama had an impressive run, finishing as table toppers with 60 points. They secured this position by winning 18 matches, drawing 6, and losing 10. This performance put them 5 points clear of the second-placed Aduana Stars.

However, the current season (2023-2024) has brought about a notable change in their fortunes. Medeama finds itself struggling at the 14th position in the league standings, a significant drop from its previous top spot. They have won just 1 out of the first three games played in the new season, indicating a challenging start.

On the other hand, the historically successful team, Asante Kotoko, had a somewhat difficult time in the previous season, finishing in fourth place with 52 points. They managed to secure victory in 16 matches during that season.

Predict Ghana Premier League Outcome

The new season has started on a far less favorable note for them. As of October 9th, Asante Kotoko sits at the bottom of the league table, occupying the 18th position. What's particularly surprising is that they have yet to secure a single win in the current season, marking a significant contrast to their performance in the previous year.

Amidst these struggles, a remarkable story unfolds with the newly promoted team, Bofoakwa Tano. In the current season, they are experiencing an extraordinary run, currently occupying the top spot in the league table with 8 points.

This outstanding performance indicates that they are well on their way to potentially achieving a historic qualification for the CAF Champions League, an accomplishment that few expected from a newly promoted team.

The standings in any football league can be significantly impacted by various factors. Transfers, for instance, can reshape the competitive landscape. Clubs bringing in new talent or losing key players can experience shifts in performance.

Injuries to key players can also have a substantial impact, as they may force teams to adapt their strategies and formations. Suspensions can further disrupt a team's rhythm, especially if important players are sidelined due to disciplinary issues.

As of now, we're still in the early stages of the current season, and it's essential to remember that the league table can evolve significantly as the season progresses. Teams may find their footing, injured players may return, new signings could make an impact, and suspended players may complete their bans.

Ghana Premier League Results

Ghana Premier League Results

The 2023-2024 Ghana Premier League season has kicked off with a series of surprising results and exciting developments. In the opening match of the season, perennial favorites Heart of Oaks suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tamale, setting the stage for an unpredictable season.

Matchday 2 brought another major upset as the most successful team in the league's history, Asante Kotoko, was defeated 2-1 by underdogs Bibiani Gold Stars.

One of the standout stories of the season so far is the performance of the newly promoted Bofoakwa Tano. While their first match ended in a goalless draw, they quickly established themselves as a team to watch by securing a 2-1 victory over Tamale on matchday 2.

The real shocker came on matchday 3 when Tono pulled off a remarkable 1-0 win against the giant Heart of Oaks, leaving fans in awe of their capabilities. The team's fourth week ended with another solid defensive display, holding the Lions to a goalless draw.

These early-season results have disrupted the traditional power dynamic in the league, with unexpected victories and a strong showing from Bofoakwa Tano.

It's clear that this season will be marked by increased competition and excitement as underdogs are challenging the dominance of established clubs. As the tournament progresses, fans can look forward to more thrilling matches and a potential changing of the guard in Ghana's top-flight football.

Ghana Premier League Predictions and Tips

As fans gear up for another thrilling campaign, we take a closer look at some predictions and tips for the upcoming season.

Asante Kotoko is the most successful club in the league's history, winning the title 24 times. They have a strong team led by coach Dr. Prosper Nartey Ogum. With star players like Enock Morrison, Isaac Oppong, and Emmanuel Sarkodie, they are expected to compete for the title once again. Despite their current position at the bottom of the table, history shows that Asante Kotoko has a habit of coming back strong.

Medeama SC is another strong contender for the championship as the defending champions. They boast a solid lineup under the leadership of captain Joseph Tetteh Zutah, and their attack features Joshua Agyemang, Derrick Fordjour, and Darlington Gyanfosu. With their experienced manager, Ignatius Osei-Fosu, who played a crucial role in their last season's success, they are poised to make a strong title defense.

Keep an eye on Bofoakwa Tano, a recently promoted team from Division One. Thanks to players like Abieki Aikins, Mohamade Gwlangjou, and Bobby Prince, they have had an impressive start to their Premier League campaign. While it might be ambitious to expect them to win the league, their manager, Emmanuel Ofori Asumadu, believes his team is capable of achieving great things by the end of the season.

These are all assumptions, and in a sporting event like soccer, things can take a quick turnaround. That said, keep yourself updated with Parimatch and make next-to-accurate predictions!
